what is the best way to convert VHS to DVD?

hello everyone, this is my first time posting on this forum so i hope i'm posting this question in the right section. i'm trying to find out what is the best way to record a VHS tape to my computer, then take that recording and put it on a DVD Creator to also add chapter splits within the video recording. i need to know what program(s) i should use to capture the VHS and what program(s) i should use to create the DVD with custom chapter splits and menus and other stuff like that, and what kind of equipment, if any, i need to use/buy.
 
An analog video line out (RCA plug) will work. You'll need to connect your Analog sound out on your VHS player to your line in on your sound card to get sound as well. You'd need an RCA to mini-stereo plug for the sound most likely. Unless your sound card has RCA line in.

Then you'll need a DVD burner, many come with software for the chapters you want. If not, there are many good programs that can do that for free.

you'll need a capture device and a burner...most burners come with programs to record...and some capture devices come with programs for that also
 
ok check this out, i got the Dazzle 80 and it works good. 1 question tho, how can i make that line and the top and bottom of the screen go away? i'm not sure how to explain it, but if u've captured a video u might know what i'm talkin bout, its like where it almost looks like another video is playing down at the bottom or something. hopefully i've explained it well enough for it to be understood.
 
First off, the Dazzle 80 isn't much of a capture card, so I hope you don't expect DVD quality videos. I beleive it only does 320x240 and probably drops many frames...

As for the lines, I have no clue what you're talking about. Now I know VHS tapes can get slightly distorted on the top and bottom, but this is typically off screen. Remember, a TV cuts off the edges of the picture so you actually see more than what you normally would see on the TV... SOme programs actually have stuff setup so you can see the tv "safe zones"

o ok, so you're saying that if i go ahead, capture the video like that, and when i burn it on a DVD-R i wont see that on my home TV?

About how much would all this cost?

$20? $50?

But since he was getting it from a video tape, DVD quality wouldn't be possible anyway, would it?

What capture card would you recommend for, lets say $250 AUD (about $190 USD)


Sorry about taking over your thread, 2K5, but I was just about to start my own topic similar to this, so I thought I may-as-well just reply here and ask my questions.

It'll show up just fine on your TV, just lower quality...

Yes and no about DVD quality... DVD's run at 720x480, VHS's run at 352x240, both of these resolutions are interlaced. The Dazzle 80 from what I recall captures at 320x240 NOT interlaced. FYI, interlacing is simply showing 2 frames at once. You know when you pause your VCR and it flickers back and forth between frames? That's basically what it's doing all the time... Allows for higher quality videos...
 
Ooooh ^^; Whatever you capture will show unless it's out of the viewing range. If it didn't show up on your TV at first, it shouldn't show...
