An Operating System is software that allows you to use your computer. Windows is an OS, as are the various Linux distributions and Mac's Tiger. They can be as simple as a DOS-like command-line interface where you type in commands you want to be executed, or loaded with GUI's (Graphical User Interface - like Windows) where you can you the mouse to execute commands.
