what is the point of overclocking?

I thought about my computer from work today and I felt it is pretty lame thinking and researching about how to overclock my processor and what is the best way to do it. The thing is that I don't even see the difference doing much of my work! So what is the point of overclocking? It just makes you happy when you score higher on competitive bench mark program? Well don't get me wrong. I too, alway try to overclock my computer but this notion just snatched across my head. I started to think the processor manufacturer, software makers, video card makers are being very smart in a way that they gather people to do competitive benchmarking so that their minds are preoccupied with it all the time and be proud to have 10000 3dmark06 score computers. I love my computer but I think it is time to go out and have fun rather than sitting down and work on my computer's overclocking which brings little or no difference in what i do.
 
Basically, the reason for overclocking is the same reason you upgrade your processor to a faster one (say, from 2GHz to 2.6GHz). Only difference is overclocking is cheaper, and much more time consuming. You will only see a difference in tasks which were actually limited by your initial processor speed, and not something else.

People overclock for the same reason other people hot rod their cars: more performance out of what you have. The advantage to OCing is that if it's done modestly, it doesn't cost a cent.:)

to me it is a hobby. i just like my computer to be personal, i like getting the most out of what i pay for
 
I enjoy maximizing performance and my dollar, why buy expensive and often overpriced 'extreme' CPU's and what not when OCing lets you reach the same performance.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

You build some kind of "relationship" with your computer when you work on it and maintain it. Overclocking it is one way to do that. It's not just some "mystery box" that turns on when you push the button, it is now a machine with parts and circuits and voltage and power that you can understand and manipulate.

I like this description. Although OC can indirectly cost money aka aftermarket cpu coolers. But again it's the same with cars. There are tricks you do without spending a dime, but if you want real performance you gotta dish out the dough.
 
I overclock because you get more for your money. Granted if you just overclock your processor a few hundred Mhz, you wont notice a difference. But when you overclock your CPU, video card, and RAM, you do notice an improvement, for me I noticed a big improvement in games.

well, you did manage to get a 50% overclock which is unheard of more most people. at least before the c2ds came out.
 
Like most people said...
*get the most out of your money
*feel a sense of satisfaction in your work
*get back more time in the long run if you were constricted in the first place
*higher superpi score! (easily the most common drive)
