I'm looking to change processors on my Boistar mother board from intel dual core to pentium 4. Do I have to treat this as a complete start from scratch operation.
Wipe disk drives and such.

Why would you downgrade your processor from a dual-core to a P4? What are the specs on your current processor and the one you want to switch it with?

You shouldn't have to reformat only by changing processors, you should be able to just switch them and boot it right up.

I was told by a tech that the first line of dual core not core 2 had many problems like heat build up and other he didn't go into. But the system started freezing after three months he checked it out and said heat was an issue and dual cores in general had many flaws. Recommended either core 2 or P4.
The reason I posted to begin with is, I changed the processor and when I booted up just black screen.

While it is true the first generation of Pentium D's (if thats what your talking about), did have some heat issues, the Pentium 4's did as well. I would not down-grade still, I would check to see if your motherboard supports the Core 2 Duo.
