What is the "Subnet Mask"

Basically, a subnet mask tells your computer what network your IP is from.

For example, an IP address of 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.1.2 would be in the same network if the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 but not if the subnet mask is 255.255.255.252.

It simply lets any router/pc/switch know what portion of the IP is from a network address and which is from HOST addresses.

Hope this helps
