I thoguht all mobos had an inbuilt speaker on them, i thought it was compulsory because the BIOS needs to communicate with the user.

no, not reli. some do some dont. like the case i got, it came with its own external closure mic. so it was an extra one just like the one above.

None of my current computers have built in speakers, all use some little buzzer like that.
