What is Ubuntu?

thats also only because its new and no one can be bothered making viruses for it lol

its not new, linux is almost as old as windows, in fact i think it is older the windows. The reason there is no virses is because the security is stronger and only abotu 1-5% of people use it so there is no point

1. No-one can be bothered making viruses for it because, like all Linux-based distros, it's got an unix-like kernel and exploiting it (creating malware, viruses etc.) is extremely hard.

2.It's 4 years old, sure it's fairly new but the "newness" has nothing to do with the fact that there are very few viruses for it.

It's a very secure open source (and thus free) operating system based on Linux that is made by Canonicle. The latest version (which was released recently) is 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. I use it as my main OS and am very pleased with it.

Point 1 is correct, but point 2 isn't entirely... Ubuntu originated in 2004, but when you are talking about the base system's security you would be talking about the Linux kernel and Linux originated in 1991.

Since it is open-source it is free and it also has a lot less viruses

Open Sources does NOT mean free.

It simply means the source code is available for people to look at (unlike Windows where the code is highly restricted).

Sigh... As mentioned, Ubuntu itself is fairly young, though it's "parent" (Debian) (and Deb's parent and Deb's parent's parent...) is well-rooted. And although your posts make you sound like a complete fool, you actually (inadvertently, I imagine) are half-right about the last part: no one can be bothered to make viruses for it. Reason being is there are way too many variables to successfully load a virus onto a Linux-based system, and then a whole other set of variables to actually execute the program. And even if someone were to go through all that trouble, chances are it would be all for naught, as anything even remotely having the power to affect the core system needs Root access.

You both fail.

And it can be further traced back to the late 70's if one so desires.

I think half of the people in this thread haven't a clue what they're talking about.

You do not fail.

You win, actually...:D

Yeah, well I was talking about Minix, but then UNIX goes back to 1969. :) So yeah, you're definitely right.

Of course if one really wanted they could trace anything back to the beginning of time. :D
