What kind of power supply do I need?

For a Intel core 2 duo E6550, A gigabyte P35, 2 gb of ram, a hard drive, a dvd burner, some case fans, and a 8600 videocard?

Im thinking of getting an antec true power trio 550W

According to ceewi1's usful PSU Guides:

350 Watts and 18 amps on the 12 V rail for a 8600 GTS.
300 Watts and 20 amps on the 12 V rail for an 8600 GT.

That PSU should be good enough, but I'm sure people here can recommend a better one for the same price or less.

Dave's Corsair is a good recommendation. It has good amperage @ the +12V rails, and can easily support any single GPU configuration.

580w / 12= 48a.. not 44 my bad

so like the OCZ 700w is 680w to the 12v, so 680 / 12= 56a

i think thats it, if not its close, ceewi will correct me if so :P

but im 90% sure thats the formula

PC power supply and cooling located in San Diego area makes a "silencer" that is incredibly quiet. For those interested in live recording this is an important feature. These seem conservatively rated.

Close. Total 12V wattage/12 is indeed the correct formula, but if you take a very close look at the label on the OCZ units, you'll see that the 580W/680W isn't actually the wattage on the +12V rails - it's the wattage over the +12V, +5V and +3.3V rails.

The GameXStream 700W is rated for 50A (that figure is printed in rather small font elsewhere on the label). The StealthXStream 600W doesn't state a total +12V wattage/amperage anywhere, although we can say for sure it's less than 48A, most likely around 42A (although these units should never be pushed anywhere near that high - 12V ripple goes way out of spec).

Silent compared to the Turbo-Cool maybe, but certainly not compared to some of the other units out there - heck, a single 80mm fan is not a good start for silence. They are conservatively rated, but even the 610W is far more power (and price) than he needs.

The TruePower III you're looking at will provide more than enough power, and is generally well priced. It's not a bad choice at all. I'd also look at Corsair's VX450/550. Also very well priced and better quality units. Either will provide ample power for your system.
