I currently have a 2.0GHZ celeron with 256mb ram and 64mb integrated card which is probably not enough to play even post 2000 games. What kind of upgrade should i make to my PC to make it run games which were released before or during the year 2004 super smoothly i.e. like around 35-40 and minimum 30FPS.

Here are my further specifications:
64mb intel 82845g integrated card
Intel D845GVSR motherboard
256mb Kingston DDR
Celeron 2.0ghz ( 128kb cache )

Well to be honest, all components are very subpar. The s478 allows a 533fsb P4 chip at most, It accepts 184pin ddr memory, up to pc2700 i believe, it has small expansion slot capabilities, it only has three PCI slots, with the best graphics card possible being something around a x1300. But if you are looking for the single best thing you can upgrade to play games better it would be the graphics, though that low RAM is concerning. Think about doubling the RAM, and adding PCI card such as the X1300, at the very least

You could but in the end you would end up spending around 300$ bucks which isn't worth it

But if all he wants to play are old games, then it isn't worth a new build either.

Anyways A 2.0 P4, if he could find one, another 256Mb of pc2700 and a x1300 Would probably be around $100-150 or less.

It's enough spec to run mame games and games from 1995-1998 otherwise a complete rebuild is needed.
