What OS should I install

I have a Gateway Solo 1150 laptop computer, that I got for free. I went to reinstall because there was still all the info and junk from previous owner. When I was prompted to insert disk 2 of 3 I realized that disk 2 was missing, ooops! The computer originally had ME on it and we all know about that. Should I spend the extra money and go up to W 2000, the computer does meet requirements (i think?). Or should I get W 98? It would cost much less. This computer is my third laptop, I have two much newer notebooks and a desktop with XP. The 1150 is used for internet searching only 3 days a year. I'm leaning to go with W 98, what do you think.

Linux. Ubuntu is good, some things might be a little slow though. There is loads of small sized linux distros made for laptops like that.

With those specs you can easily run XP. I'm running XP on a 500mhz laptop with 256mb of ram, and it's quite snappy.

Yes I think XP would run on this model, I'd be a bit concerned about speed though. Also I stated earlier I only use this computer for one weekend every year. I don't want to spend the money for XP on a computer I use 3 days a year. That's why I'm considering something cheaper like 98, over even 2000. I have to admit I'm not familiar with linux OS's, this may be a good time to jump in.(?)

With linux and wifi, it is a hit or miss. The more popular wifi cards are supported, but some off brands arent. If you download a ubuntu, it comes automatically installed with a live cd. Basicly this allows you to reboot and load the entire ubuntu operating system off the cd to see if you like it and want to install it, without touching your hard drive.

I think that it might be time to get a new Lap Top. You are about 3-4 generations behind.

I would run Windows XP, and don't consider Vista until it comes out with the first service package.
