home premium 64 bit. ultimate has nothing useful to you, except maybe drive encryption which makes disaster recovery a pain in the butt anyway

XP works great for me, too, it works great for pretty much anyone - but it's dying and MS ain't gonna revive a dead horse. IMO if it has to be windows, Vista is the way to go. For gaming, Vista is the way to go, no question. For general use (internet, browsing etc.) you might as well get Linux, since it's free. I just got ubuntu and I really like it, plus you don't have to know anyting about linux to get basic stuff like e-mail, internet etc. set up and working.

If you get any version if vista, it has to be Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit SP1.
Home Premium will be just fine, just like Cleric said. Features of Ultimate don't justify the price tag, IMO.

Oh and Linux will be even better for downloading por...i mean burning and just general surfing the net since you have more control over who can access what files and so on ;)

XP works great for me!

It wont for him. He has 4gb of RAM which means he needs a 64 bit OS to take full advantage of it. and xp pro x64 is crappy. Therefore he should go with vista.

And yeah, as you have got a DX10 video card and area gamer, vista is a better bet for that.

Go for home premium. Ultimate is a waste of money unless you need domain support
