What problems can occur to the pixels on a monitor?

I bought this 20" emachines monitor used from a Gamerz Haven, just something to get me by... immediately when I first began to use the monitor, I knew why someone sold it. The monitor technically "functions" but I could see some patches or 'groups' of pixels malfunctioning...just enough to be a nuisance.

I just wanted to know what exactly is the terminology or the "calling" of malfunctioning groups of pixels... For example, a white background should be pure white and yet I see patches of a faint green... and also I can see the pixels... no my face is not pressed against the screen, I am at least 3 feet from my monitor. Yet I can see the pixels!

Is it just an old model?

My cathode ray tube was better than this flat screen I purchased (but it was smaller and heavy).

Anyway, this is only a temporary fix but I wanted to know again if anyone knows what could be causing the malfunctioning collection of pixels dispersed randomly throughout the monitor.
 
Well eMachines isn't exactly the best brand in the world, and I didn't even know they made monitors, so that tells you something. It's probably a used monitor and the pixels just died due to poor quality control. I'd talk to the place where you got it from and see if you can get it replaced or reimbursed. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you spend on it?
 
I just picked it up from basically a pawn shop for $40.00 so I don't think I lost too badly or anything. It does its job as a base monitor
