What ram to upgrade to?

After reading Ram 101 I now understand I’m a numskull! Just kidding, but from what I got out of it, I need to buy ram suited to my particular system, mobo and other components in an older system. I don’t want to spend more than I need, nor miss out on the right stick (like I don’t know if I should get 1gig or 2x512mb cause I don’t know which is best for my system) for the sake of a few bucks! Any help would be much appreciated

If you have newer board with dual channel, 2 512 will run in dual channel where 1gb stick wont, alittle performance hit, but if you get a 1gb stick, it leaves more slots open to upgrade later, as to say 2 1gbs sticks later for dual channel when money lets you.

So how can I tell if I have Dual Channel or not?
Or should I go with something like this and don't worry if I have Dual Channel or not?

2GB 400Mhz PC3200 PC2700 DDR400 184PIN 2 x 1 GB 400 RAM

You can tell duel channel by:

The motherboard - it will tell you in the manual or in any good reviews. Most new motherboards are dual channel.

The memory - usually when you buy it, it will come in groups (eg 512x2 or 1gb x2) and will have dual channel in the specification or title.

Dual channel is pretty good to have, means the memory works better together and Isn't that expensive these days. I would recommend 1gb x2 of dual memory as the is the standard in most machines, 4gb is overkill and 1gb or 512 x2 maybe slow depending on what your using your pc for.
