Hey guys

I'm a student and don't have a unlimited access to money. So have a question for you, since I'm not that much into computers and what's inside of them. The question is, what can you recommend that i should buy an upgrade of first?

You can se my gear under here:

Operating system: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz - Wolfdale 45nm Technology

Ram: 4,00GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz (5-5-5-18)

Motherboard: S19-1 (1280x1024@60Hz) - S19-1 (1280x1024@60Hz) - 896MB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 260 (NVIDIA)

Harddrives: 699GB samsung HD753LJ ATA Device (SATA) - 1863GB Seagate ST2000DM001-9YN164 ATA Device (SATA)

(Don't even know if i need to write these two, but here goes)

Optical Drives: Optiarc DVD RW AD-5200S ATA Device

Audio: High Definition Audio Device

I hope you can help, and maybe even send me a link with the upgrade you think needs to be done first.

Thanks!

Why do you feel you need to upgrade? Are games running slowly? Is Windows running slowly? What exactly do you feel needs to be changed?

Going by your post you're still running a 1280x1024 monitor. A GTX 260 should max pretty much anything out on that, but I'd honestly suggest getting a new monitor to be honest. You can get 24" 1080p displays for not a lot of money these days.

I have asked around friends, and when i mention my Geforce GTX260, they say it's nearly antique, so that was my first intention to change. I'm playing games and they run slow, even Minecraft (If you don't know it, it's the cube game, short version) lags, and i have to set all video graphics to minimum for a smooth gameplay. That kinda annoys me.

My monitors are fine, but they are old to. I was thinking if i should upgrade those to. But now you know.

Hope it made sense.

Yeah the GTX 260 is an old card but it's about the same age as your CPU and the rest of your setup.

You could try upgrading it to something like a 750 Ti or a 760. That would be faster than the 260 and the E8400 shouldn't bottleneck either of those cards too badly (if at all). What power supply do you have?

You could always look at getting an aftermarket cooler and overclocking your E8400 if your board supports it. What motherboard do you have?

Yes i know, i bought it all at the same time. Haven't really changed anything, except form my powersupply and set another harddrive in. But it is a long time ago, 5 years maybe.

Those cards would be a major boost, yes. Nice thanks, but my motherboard: EP43-DS3L (socket 775)

By the way, i don't know what a aftermarket cooler is, or how i can overclock my E8400, sorry.

OK don't worry about overclocking then - I don't think your board is really suitable for overclocking anyway.

So yeah for the time being I'd probably get a GTX 750 Ti or a GTX 760 (or if you're interested in Radeons look at the R7 260X or the R9 270 - both good cards!) and see how you get on.

If your current PSU is running the 260 OK it should run a newer card fine since they'll consume much less power.

You can look at upgrading your monitors later if you want but once you go widescreen you won't want to go back to those 1280x1024 monitors believe me - especially for gaming. :good:

Haha thank you very much, that helped. I will go look for a cheap one of those. But yes i have seen some of my friends with better screen, makes me a bit jealous!

Thank you and good day!

No worries. By the way, the Radeons tend to be a little cheaper than the GeForces but perform just as well. ;)

consider grab second hand C2Q.

Could do but it's a bit of a waste of money when it's not likely going to make as much difference as a newer graphics card.

Get something like a Q9300 or a Q9450 if you find your E8400 is bottling you, but at 1280x1024 you should be close to maxing most games with the E8400 and a GTX 750 Ti. I've got a friend who has an E6300 and a GTS 250 and he just about maxes everything out at 1280x1024. ;)
