I am building a new one hopefully this week, or whenever the parts come...

My old one or the one i'm using right now, what should I do with it? It's too good to just throw out... Are any of the parts worth putting into the new machine?

AMD 1.4ghz cpu

512mb RAM (just added 256 not long ago)

Western Digital 112GB HD

Gigabyte LTD 7DX MoBo

NVidia GeForce2 Mx/Mx 400

With a good reformat it would probably run pretty well

what do u think?

Take the parts out and sell them separatly.

Keep the hard drive. Having more than one drive allows you to reinstall Windows, or survive a virus without losing everything. I have my largest drive set aside for music, videos, pics, and general crap, and my Raptor for programs.

You won't get much for the parts separately. There isn't much there to speak of. Just add a bunch of harddrives to it and use it as your file server.

ehhh?

I didnt mean to give off the opposite impression, but i'm kind of a computer noob...

this will be the first machine i've ever built

my suggestion would be that as long as its working donate it to a school/library/youth workers etc

these people can use old computers and put them to good use. I know its a shame to give something away like that but at least its going to good use and not just rotting away in a cupboard.

I've given three old systems to to various places so far and they are always appreciated.

jsut wipe it clean, reinstall windows and phone around to see if anyone would like to collect it :)

plus ya get the warm fuzzy feeling of having done something useful :D

I personally would use it as a linux box for a while, just because I need to advance my knowledge in that area. Other than that, I would donate it to someone.

Use it for Linux, or make a mp3 player out of it and hook it up to your sound system (If you have one that is not linked to a computer).
