What should i do with old computer.

i have an old pc with 533 mhz cpu. so not too fast lol.

im thinking of letting my mum use it.

we will need a 3rd PC soon and i need some advice.

theres no chance of buying a new one.

1. what if i buy a new cpu. it can take a celeron so maybe if i can find a 3 ghz one for cheap that would be a good idea?

2. it currently has xp. should i put linux on it so it will run better?

3. ill find out what mobo it has so i can see what upgrade options i have.

so what do you think?

*edit* i just tried to turn it on. and its not working. when it is plugged in it just turns itself on. but nothing on the monitor. what could be wrong?
it doesnt actually sound like its loading or anything. everything just starts spinning i think.

well if its not even loading into the bios screen then the problem might be the CPU or video card or mobo, its hard to tell
 
the last thing i did with it was take out the hard drive and put it back in. (long story)
could that cause something like this?
 
Video card :D Try that. Then re-seat memory and CPU. Make sure the speaker is plugged in and see if any beeps come up.

Good storage/music sever... maybe a small game server?
 
but why would it turn on even though i havent pressed the on button?

i tried reseating stuff. hasnt worked lol
 
If you turned it on and just ripped the plug offa it, it will turn on automatically. Pressing the power until it turns off should do the trick.
 
lol no its still not working. i reckon ill just take it apart for spare parts. lol i dont carte about it much
