What should I get AMD or Intel

I want to know what I should get for my computer. I am using it to program so I don't want it to be too powerful or too weak. Please reply

Well a budget would be nice. Also, are you building it yourself or open to it or just want to buy one? Or are you upgrading an existing computer?

Basically the answer is intel and an i3 will probably be your best bet but the other info would help us be sure.

is amd nice

nice? they do the job but intel is better, the only time an amd is really recommended is if you live near a microcenter or want to overclock. If you live near a microcenter then they have a deal where certain amd processors and mobos are 40 off together but if you can afford it the intel combos are a lot better. Otherwise Intel takes the cake, the i3 is about the same on 4 core programs but it kills amd processors on single threaded. Although you can get an amd "6 core" (not really six but too much to explain) or "8 core" for not too much more and if the programming is fully threaded and can use that many cores then they should be better than an intel processor for the money.

so amd is what i need
negative. I have only a small amount of programming knowledge, but I know for sure that the higher IPC of the intel will cause your compiling to go much faster. You can use AMD if you want, but you are only wasting your own time.

They are by no means overpriced. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/289?vs=102 shows the closest thing to a FX4100 you will find. The price difference is $10. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

If you want worse performance for the same price, then go for it. Don't come back being sore about your performance.

but would the 8 threads of a 8120 help him? and if he live near a microcenter and is on a uber tight budget then amd is better when the cpu/mobo is 40 off together and the 4100 is 90, 6100 is 110, and 8120 is 140, and a phenom x4 965 or x6 1045 are both 90 too.

yeah, microcenter would be the place to go, but even if he did have one close by, an intel bundle would still be the way to go. he could get a i3 2100 and a asrock pro 4 motherboard for around $150, or even an i5 2500k and board for around $225. this is the way to go, cuz now he is able to be on a platform thats performance can grow, by upgrading to higher end cpu's in the future, instead of being locked down with an amd platform, that is pretty limitied in performance compared to intel. i have an i3 2100 running in one of my builds, and ill tell you what, its better than most quad core amd chips, pulls about 41 Gflops on intel burntest, compared to the phenom II x 4 965 which pulls 43Gflops. it beats all amd chips in single threaded applications. and it only gets better since your on a 1155 socket. go intel, and dont think about it again. budget conscience or not, i strongly recomend going with some sort of intel platform. the performance is hard to ignore.

your point is good but info is wrong, the 50 off combo is only for the 3570k and 3770k, not the 2000 series or any i3's

From my gaming experience, I think there's not a significant difference between AMD and Processors so far (comparing AMD Phenom II 975 to i5-3570K) both at stock level. However, I've never overclocked, but for everyday usage for online streaming videos, web-browsing, you probably won't notice any difference :P

Intel vs AMD is like Gillette vs Bic. They both do the job if you put them on it, but any sane man would use Gillette as a prefered mark, but if it's not available, a bic should do the job just fine.

well you can't tell the difference but if you actually see the framerates there is a good difference, some games will get almost double the fps but the amd cpus are still strong enought to get you ~60fps so you can't see a difference in game.
