I would get the acer because like you said, you get more laptop for the price. However i do have a good story from dell. I bought a dell xps m1210 a few years ago for around $1500 directly from dell and thought that was a good deal at the time. It was for my brother who planned to study abroad at the time. Unfortunately they paired windows vista with 1gb ram and a 80gb hdd...
Now that i think back on it i could've gotten much better. The great thing is the laptop is still up and running with it's original installation of windows vista. It became incredibly sluggish until recently (finally) i upgraded it to 2.5gb ram. I have to say.. that is a quality laptop and was well worth the money even though i might've found a stronger laptop with something else.
EDIT: i just noticed that you were choosing between netbook or laptop. Well it depends what you will be doing. I think a regular laptop would be plenty good for a college student. However a netbook could be useful if all your going to be doing is typing, web browsing. And maybe if you want to sit somewhere on your netbook watching a movie, web browsing, etc for hours without the charger.
