what should I get?

I am thinking of building a computer. I have never built one before but am familar with using computers and I have been researching how to build one and it doesn't seem to complitcated. One thing is I need help choosing a motherboard. I have 500 bucks to spend on this progect anbd want to build the fastest machine I can. I will be using ebay to save cash. Anyway, I want to use an intel processor proably a pentium 3 since pentium 4s are exepnsive. I would like one that can run a processor of 2ghz or more and I plan on using 1gb of ram. I am not much of a gamer so it can have an on board video card and sound card but I would perfer that it had atleast and upgradable video card.

the only things I have is a CD burner, a CDrom drive, a floppy drive, keyboard, mouse and monitor. I need to buy everything else. I will be using it mostly for internet(cable), work, online videos, dowloading music and maby a few games.

when you ask for a good motherboard, what are you planning on doing with the computer (do you want to overclock) and do you want it to be AMD or Intel?

I was planning on using intel but someone told me AMD was better so now I am comfused. I always though intels were supposed to be better. I am only going to use 1 processor and will not be overclocking it.

Everyone has their own opinion.



AMD processors are less expensive than Intel processors, but dont let that fool you.. less expensive does not always equate to a decrease in quality.

AMD's cost difference included the processors inability to deal with heat.. which meant it would overheat very easily - not the case anymore (Intel still has the edge though).

Gamers tend to overclock their CPU's, because you can unlock the multiplier on an AMD .. but from what I have read you can overclock an intel P4 as well (just not as easily).

Performance wise Intel has the edge.. but when you factor in the cost difference... AMD has the price edge.

I think to answer your question you need to find a review on the internet that is truly balanced and neutral, which on a forum like this, is next to impossible.

1. You'll moste likely have a PSU too and a case
2. So essentially you want a general computer ... without any [particular] games in mind?

Can someone please recomend one that will work. I want one with a single processor.

Neither company is "supposed" to be better than the other.

You've not seen the prices of the P4E(775s) have ya ... those things are cheap!

You cant generically class an entire product series (not just a line but a series) that cleanly. Also, pricewise, it really depends on the bracket.
