What specs should i be looking at?

some things are better on the radeon, somethings are better on the geforce, i dunno which to choose. :|

Overall they perform the same, but I would go with 8600GTS because it supports DX10 and consume less power

Thats not a reliable source, because 8600GT beats 7600GT in almost all benchmarks

edit - nvm, hmmm.. those two links are pretty conflicting results.. maybe i'd be better off saving up for a 8800 series?

of course you would be better off with an 8800 if thats a possibility for you in the near future then i would definitely save up for the better card that will last you longer
