Malware, you need cleaning. Look at the sticky in the security section of the forums and follow it first. Post a new thread in the security section of the forums with your hijack this log in it if need be.

Go into control panel and open the administrative tools. Now click service. Scroll down to "messenger" and double click it. Where it says start up type, use the drop down box and select disbaled and also click the stop button. Apply it, and press ok, then you wont/shouldnt have any more of these

If he uses the messenger service for other things this won't really be a good solution. While it disables this message from appearing, it also disables any/all other things that need the messenger service to run properly. It also doesn't fix anything if he has malware on his computer, it jsut prevents it from being seen. it is a solution, just not the best one if you use the messenger service and want to get rid of this malware in full.

The pop up that came up was used by the messenger service.
Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
AFAIK, nothing other then those annoying pop ups, use the messenger service. And is infact, one of the first things i do when i re install windows.

Many programs use the messenger service, especially across networks. more than likely hes not using any if this is a stand alone computer, but its a good idea to make surre before he disables the service then starts a thread because something wont work and it turns out to be because he disabled that service.

And again, simply disabling the service won't get rid of any malware that might be on his machine. IF you get pop-ups, the chances of other stuff being on your computer that you don't know about are pretty good. simply disabling the service will block that pop-up, but that's it. it's a good idea to at least check for other malware if you've already been attacked once.

True, but that pop up wasnt caused by malware.

Here's a description of them

How do you know? It is possible for malware to work through the messenger service, even when you are not connected to the internet. I had an infection where the second i booted up my computer, i would get dozens of ads on my desktop from nowhere, i didn't even have to be plugged into the internet.

I am only stressing he check for other problems with his machine, because when you are battling malware you never just assume it's fixed if you don't see it anymore. the best malware are the ones that work right under your nose, and you can't see anything until it's too late.

your suggestion was right, if he doesn't need the messenger service than it can be disabled to prevent this pop-up. But i only suggest he go one step further to make sure thats not his only problem.

Because by default windows will allow other computers to connect to yours and put random pop ups on screen. These are the pop ups which have "Messenger Service" in the title bar. Obviously scanning for malware will help his computer though

Help this person.

Here's how to disable that pesky messenger service which most people will never need:

# Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
# Click Administrative Tools
# Click Services
# Double click Services Scroll
# down and highlight "Messenger"
# Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
# Click the STOP button.
# Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar
# Click OK

This DOES NOT look like malware. Rather, it is a mass-IP message broadcast usually used by advertising companies. Afterwards, scan and clean out any malware you find, filip.

Genius. Way to go.:)

We weren't arguing, i was just trying to convince you to go one step further to help better protect your computer. disabling the messenger will stop some pop-ups, but that's it. the rest of your computer is open to attack security wise...if that makes you happy, well i guess just leave it at that.
