What the hell have they done?

Hi, I was having a problem with my laptop. When I turned it on it made like a loud buzzing noise, almost like a fly was trapped inside it! I had a coverplan and I have sent it to them 4 times for them to fix it!!!! During this period they had it a total of 8 weeks and they replaced the fan which didnt work, replaced the hard drive which didnt work, and the final time they have AGAIN replaced the hard drive and replaced the main board. The noise has now stopped.
I'm very unhappy the way it has come back to me, the hard drive is very loud and the laptop is taking 1 minute 30 seconds plus to boot up and get to desktop. Would the replacing of the main board cause this problem with slow boot up? (bare in mind it is a new hard drive so there are no programmes on there to slow it down!!) Perhaps they have put a cheap one inside it?
If anybody can explain anything to me in greater detail I would be very grateful as I need to contact this company and tell them im not happy with what theyve done. Thank You, Matt

It would be difficult to put a useless motherboard in the laptop, it would have to be the exact same as the orignal.

However, they would of likely put a slow HDD in. It doesnt really matter if its new, if it has a slow spool speed, small cache, then Its going to take a while to load.

Also, its most likely a crap HDD, so its noisy. I would complain.

I let them look at the hard drive in pc world, they said it was an IBM and fairly decent. I've already complained to the company about all this (theyve scratched it too) and basically theyve said 'aslong as its running what do you want us to do?'. How useless is that! I can get over the slightly louder HDD, but taking 1min 30 secs to get to desktop on a fairly decent laptop like this is stupid. Am i being paranoid or is that a long time for a boot up?

What are the specs of the rest of the laptop?

Also, if you find the loading times too much, then you could get an up to date HDD.

Its 2 years old Packard Bell, Pentium 4, 2.80GHz, 512mb, 40gb. I know they arent top of the line specs, but they aren't bad - and like it said, it didnt take that long to start up before. So is that due to the hard drive yeh? I dont see why i should have to buy a new HDD though when i paid £459 on a cover plan!!! They should have replaced it with what I had before.

it sounds like a power issue.

If they keep on putting new things in, and then the new things get fry'ed, it means that the power output is messed up.

I also have a fan that buzzes on my desktop...I just give it a good wack and it stops. But i think that is because the ball bearings get off track or something, and the fan is just gettin old

no, you should not have to buy a new HDD. check the small print on your coverplan and read it all thoroughly to see what your entitled to. If this is PC World then i know for fact that they are NOPT ALLOWED to replace parts in your system with older parts than are currently in there. What shop did you get it from??

Power issue - Doubt it very much.

Dragon is right, any parts should be covered under the plan.

That specs are sround what my laptop was, and it took around 40s to finish loading everything.

Yes, i would think it was due to the HDD, I would ask and see if they still jave your old HDD, and demand it back (Keep the one you have and sell it lol :D)

I got it from PC World, they offered me a coverplan for 5 years - but it was with some company called 'Master Care' (ye whatever!). So every time they have to look at it, i have to have it picked up and taken to mansfield. I haven't paid for any of the parts put in, and they have sent me my old HDD drives back twice, (are they easy enough to put back in myself by the way?) i'm not happy with the scratches, the hard drives loud noise, or the boot up time. But what shall i actually say to them about the boot up, i gotta sound like i know what im on about, so what shall i say its caused by? The fact theyve messed around with it so much or what?

You should say to them that you think they have installed a lower specification Hard Drive to what was in as the laptops booting times have increase dramaticly. Also, its very easy to reinstall the drive.

I had a look at replacing the hard drive with 1 of my old 1's last night. The 2 old 1's I have are slightly smaller than the new loud, rubbish hard drive - so I had to put it back in :(
