What to do about mobo?

Problem :
My friend gave me his computer to fix. When you turn it on, the fans spin for like 3 seconds and than stops and Nothing boots up, but the green light on the mobo is on.

This is what he did:
After asking him what he did, This is what i came up with: He has a 20 pin psu (antec 450w) and a 24pin motherboard (ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard). He pluged in the psu to the mobo, leaving 4 pins open. He read that he could do this and everything would be ok. I have heard this to but what he did next is what i think messed up the computer. He plugged in the the 4 pin connecter( the one thats suppose to go to the ATX 12v) into the remaining 4 pins. Thats when all things stopped working.

Now my question is, what can i do to fix this?

Is there a way to fix this?

Do i or even could I rma it?

Any help would be apprecaiated. Thanks

I have had the same problem, but I didn't do what he did. The problem was the motherboard. I did an RMA on Newegg after 30 days had already passed and they still did it. I got a new one and everything worked fine. So maybe it's his motherboard.

check to make sure the ram is fully seated and the processor is fully seated, and correctly seated. motherboards will turn on, search for all components, and if it is missing one, such as the ram or processor, it will shut off after like a couple seconds.

Ok i get through toasus and I'm RMAing it. Is there a chance that they could find out what really happened(I told them it just happened by itself) and not fix it?

I Thought it was fried too but I cant you see blown circuits or any visible damage. I couldnt find anything that looked wrong with it.
