I have a Toshiba Portege 660cdt that I want to use on trips. The problem is the dialup is slower than I expected it would be.It's has a Pentium (R) processor ,16mb Ram and 1300mb H/drive.Is there anything I can do to upgrade this unit to increase it's speed using dail-up?As you can see I'm not much of a computer wiz.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Ovenmaster,
I'm only getting 28kbps.I checked out my AT13 reading and it says Toshiba 28.8.I think I'm stuck with this nightmare? Thanks for replying to my Post.

upgrading the ram in one of my old pc's increased my response time internet wise. i upgraded from 24 to 48mb's i believe and the internet was faster.

chances are... just short of getting a new modem that supports higher transfer speeds... you are stuck with that connection... i know on some of my computers i have the option to change the speed to anything slower than maximum... i'd check on that...

Code AT13 or AT14 returns a modem model name or other ID. If it says 28.8, then that's how fast your modem goes. If you can't update the driver or flash the firmware, that speed is your maximum. The solution therefore is either DSL, or cable, or a new modem.

Didn't know that there were still people out there using dial up...come on its the 21st century -- dial up is sooooooooo 1990's, change to DSL any you wont have this problem

i'd like to see what dsl does to an old system like that... obivously the 28.8 modem is the limitation here. i dont think there's anything that can be done short of a new system

1. I use dialup because it's what I can afford and it serves me just fine. I had read that anywhere from 40 to 60 percent of all people online (yes, even in the US) use dialup access. When the cost of DSL drops to what I pay per month for dialup ($12) then I will consider it. Plus, DSL or even cable internet service is not available in all areas. Try getting DSL if you live in a rural area.

Besides, dialup teaches one to have patience:D

2. My local library used to use a network of DEC Pentium I's @ 200MHz with DSL and they simply flew!

Hairy Lee,
I was just told that DSL was only a waste of money for this unit. It's time to give it to the Bears in the woods.I made a huge mistake buying this on Ebay next time I'll know better.Later. BillyBob
