What to do with my desktop computer?

innuendo

I recently bought a laptop and won't be using my old desktop pc anymore (512 ram, 40gb hdd, cpu pentium 4 1.7ghz, windows xp, phoenix bios) it was bought in 2000

What useful stuff can I do with it? (besides shooting at it or blowing it up lol) srsly now, Can I use it or any of its components in anyway to benefit my laptop or something? I read somewhere about using it as a server but I'm not sure how that works, I learn fast tho:o

I would give it to some kid who's parents do not have the money for a system. I did that with an old compaq system my wife had, it really made me feel good to help some kid out. Just be sure to reformat it before hand and reinstall the OS for the kid.

I also upgraded that system with another hard drive and ram I had laying around before giving it to him.

1) File server, printer server, old game server
2) Media PC, throw in a tuner with a dedicated hardware encoder and you can watch and record TV.
3) Install linux on it and use it as a secondary computer

I think all the good ideas have been taken. But I think you should just keep it in your closet or something like that, you never know what might happen. You could possibly give it to Goodwill or something like that...I'm sure a person would love to take a computer like that.

i could never use a laptop as my primary

set the desktop up to do stuff while you're away....

coverting/downloading/compressing/decompiling/etc. etc. etc.
