now that i've decided/been made to build another computer is there anything useful i can do with my old one that doesn't have a hardrive? I was thinking of making it a server but i would be the only one using my internet so that is a waste... just wondering if there is something neat to do that im not thinking of:D

Have any family member or close friends that could use it like a student soon to be back in school? If they have the money for a new drive and disk for the version of Windows they want to run tell them you will put the new drive in and install the OS for them. That way the system can still be put to use.

Take it apart and sell it for parts.. I need memory :)

errr its not exactly a performance piece:P i built it when i was a sophmore in high school ... now im a junior in college so... needless to say the mem is not that good. I was thinking of giving it to my mother so she can enter the virtual world. The thing is im stingy and if there is something that could be cool for me... what is a thin client? sound intriging:cool:

The idea is to still see the older build put to use not to strip it down for parts. As for selling it would sold complete lacking a drive and OS rather then piece by piece.

Other alternatives would be donating it to a school for student use or to a low income family? If you no longer want it as a backup spare case in case the new one runs into a problem passing it along to someone who lacks a system would see it put to some productive use.

Are you suggesting using it for a boat anchor at the harbor? :P

Now, now people we can come up with some better ideas.

get something like a 40gb drive and install unbuntu onto it, then give it to your mother, im sure that would suffice for internet surfing

Like PC eye said, give it to someone that may need it. Otherwise, yeah, you could turn it into a file server, sell it entirely, or the individual components, or, as Tuffie suggested, throw it off a cliff (if you have a cliff nearby).

Media server? I was thinking of copying all my DVD's and CD's to the old computer and using a Linux distribution with software much like Windows Media Center so that I can watch my movies and listen to my music collection without the hassle of changing discs.

That would be a good replacement for a friend's son's old Dell boat anchor seeing 98SE running with only onboard video and no support for things like dvd playback only seeing PCI slots only not even an AGP port. It's old enough where the board still saw drivers for the old version of Windows.

"Parts Puppy" for a school project? Bigwood may be onto something there. At least it would end up at a school for some use.
