What to upgrade?

If it brings up vlc player then your file association is screwed up for zip files. Can you list the model numbers of each memory stick you have?

Can you create the memtest cd from a different computer?

Also try resetting the cmos.

Unplug power from power supply. Remove cmos battery, press and hold the power button on the case for 10 seconds then wait 10 minutes. Then reinsert battery and reconnect power cable and try booting up with the both sticks in.

My other computer is a laptop. I'm not sure if it will take the same ram....? I also don't have a cd drive on my sr2011wm desktop. It quit working so I took it out. Would I be able to move it from my laptop to my desktop with a flash drive? I don't understand why the ram will work by itself, but screw up when the others are in with it. I'll try resetting the cmos.

also will resetting the cmos lose all my settings I have on the computer? Like the startup programs I have disabled, processes, and all the other things I have setup the way I like them?

Yes moving the jumper is basically the same. I would suggest only having that program on the usb. Also, your computer must support booting to usb in order for this to work. The flash drive may not bootup if other files are on it.

I'm not sure if my computer supports booting to usb or not.....I can't figure it out. I deleted everything off the usb drive before I put that on there. I'll try the cmos thing, and see if that works. If it doesn't I'll post back what it does. Thanks a lot for the help, and putting up with my ignorance....lol

I cleared the cmos by jumping the pins, and I put the other 1 gb stick in there. It did the same thing. It would start to boot up, and the screen would be all blurry, and lines everywhere. Then it would say windows shutting down, and then automatically start to boot up again, and just repeat. I don't know if this ram is bad, or just incompatible.......It works by itself, but not when it is in there with te other 1 gb stick. This is pc2-5300 ram......Both 1 gb sticks are that. It says on the computer specs that the speed supported is pc2-4200..................http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=us&product=3292424&lang=en...............but why would 1 stick of pc2-5300 work, but not 2? Do I need to get 2 pc2-4200 sticks of 1gb ram?

Anything is possible with computers. Without running memtest we can't be sure if you have a bad stick of ram or not. I would find someone that can burn a memtest cd and run it and see what the results are. Some OEM computers may be picky about the memory they use.

A older OEM computer has a hard time auto adjusting the timing and voltage. Not only the speed, but does the new memory have the same timing and voltage?

It is the same model number of ram. Each stick has some different numbers on them, but they have the same model number. They are suppose to be the same overall......Both are pc2-5300 and 667mhz. They both say 1.8v on them also.....

Being a OEM, you probably cant change the timing anyway. Just for the heck of it, I would install both 1gb sticks at a time so it will boot. If you don't, install CPUZ and see if both stick run at the same timing and voltage under the memory tab.

These are screen shots of the cpuz results. This is the original stick of ram I had.....

Is there any settings you can make on a computer that could be effecting the ram, and causing the 1gb sticks not to work together....? I just don't understand why the original 1gb stick works with the 512mb stick, but not with the 1gb stick.....

Could be something to do with timings and stuff in the BIOS - possibly.

Try resetting your BIOS?

Can you actually go into the BIOS and find a Reset or Load Fail-Safe Defaults option or something?
