what do you guys use for email?

i did use Windows live mail but since they changed it its just been useless for me.

is there some other software i can use to recieve/send emails but be able to keep my existing email address?

i just downloaded Mozilla thunderbird but it asks me something about Pop or something and i dont understand what to do:cool:

FastMail.FM is a free online email provider "free of spam"! Unlike MS Hotmail, inbox.com's 2gb storage capacity with constant spam coming into a predesignated spam folder to automatically close out an account if it fills up over a 2-3week period of time, or GMail you simply create a totally new account with the same user name with the different extention.

You can add your existing account into the contacts list there to forward mail back and forth. On some you can import mail from other accounts once configured. With Outlook Express, Outlook, and TBird you simply receive mail from the ISP's mail server there.

POP is Post Office Protocol incoming mail and SMTP is Simple Mail Transfer Protocol outgoing mail. What mail carrier do you use?

I use Thunderbird and it works great. But like Stranglehold said, you will need to know your POP and SMTP.

Your internet provider should have that info, give them a call or look on their internet support page for that info.

If you know how to setup OE there TBird usually is just as easy if your email comes into Outliook directly or in Vista Windows mail. I renamed the WM icon to Vista's Outlook here. :P TBird does have an automatic detection feature once you enter the ISP assigned user name and password and select the correct type of account.

i did have that pop information somewhere but i cant find it lol....and Virgin media customer service isnt exactly the best tbh so i cant be bothred ringing them.

i came across this site which offer free email and its Uk based.

looks good but what do you think?

its Broadband prices are pretty nice aswell...considering im paying £19 a month for 2MB:eek:

Like any other free mail site you have to sign up and see how things go from there. They are advertising spam protection whether that it simply providing a spam folder, blocking spam mail by recognising code, or you setting up filters yourself like even seen with ISP mailboxes. I've had several over the years and dumped many like Hotmail fast for being magnets for spam mail.

i went with google mail in the end...its great.

thanks guys :)

Gmail is awesome. I don't even use Outlook anymore. Although you can configure POP access for Gmail in Outlook, it's easier to manage everything w/ the Gmail filters on the web, IMO.

With the exception of private emails here I refer all incoming depending on type to online accounts and am still forced to clean spam off of the ISP's mail server before I can import private mail into OE! I use one or more online accounts to misdirect spammers mainly while saving one or two for practical use. You usually have to go through several to one or two you will stay with.

Gmail has an excellent spam filter. Initially, I configured Outlook 2003 to receive the mail from my Gmail account. Never received any spam. Gmail does a pretty good job of seperating that stuff into an independent folder so it never reaches your inbox.

inbox.com sees the same thing there. Once you leave the account idle for so many days and nearly 200 spam mails start filling up the spam folder you will get a notice that your account is about to close from inactivity. That's the one big difference seen between free online accounts and one provided by the ISP.

Yeah. I used to have an ISP account. As soon as I canceled my internet service, they disallowed me fron using the account and refused to forward my mail to a new account.

ISP providers often have free accounts as well as those for subscribers. Take a look at Netzero as one good example there. Verizon, AOL, and others provide a "net" extension on the free accounts while the subscribed usually see the "com" on the end like someone@ netzero.com. The gap there prevents a link from being formed for the example.

I hear complaints by some about adwares with AOL. But when Hotmail was tried a good number of years back all you saw was spam after spam. Never click the "unsubscribe from further mailings" link since that only confirms that your address is vaild to advertisers!

i've been sending mails to AOL and they don't even receive, to hell with them,
as for my web mail i use gmail, yahoo (barely) and hotmail
as for clients i use windows mail and Outlook 2007

I use gmail via webmail. You are able to set up pop and smtp for other accounts via the web interface so I use it for my other 2 non gmail accounts as well. The spam filter is excellent.

With the ISP I've been able to see mail from any online account imported into Outlook Express or now called Windows Mail in Vista. While OE is strictly for personal contacts the spam filters by the ISP leave quite a bit to be desired there. I have to log onto the mail server first to clean the spam off in order to open OE or WM up and not have all the crap come in there.

To send mail out from the online accounts you first have to set up your contacts there and then select the contact you are sending out to from the list you have made up. Those are different from sending through OE or WM where you simply type in the address you sending mail to without always needing to create a new entry in the address book there.
