What type of network do I need?

Hi, this is my first post here.

I currently send largish batches of images(300mb - 3GB) to a colleague of mine in another country. At present, I upload them to a web server using FTP and then my colleague downloads them to their PC. I want to save time by cutting out one of the uploads by having my local PC be a server or on a VPN or something to that effect.

I want my colleague to have access to a single folder on my PC and to be able to download these images to their local PC.

I wondered what is the best setup to achieve this and can it be setup remotely(since my colleague is in another country)?

I'm running windows 7 64 bit. I don't want to purchase a dedicated server to do this but would consider a NAS server. However, I'd prefer just to set this up with my PC only though.

Thanks in advance!

Ftp would be an easy way to start. Lots of tutorials out there to find. I'd try filezilla server/client to start with.

Do you mean using a hosted server? That's what I'm currently doing.

Or do you mean I can set up me PC using Filezilla as a server so my colleague(client PC) can connect to it?

thats right. you can easily give him an authorized password. other features for a pay ver is his wan ip etc. turn it on/off. ive done many times like for family pictures. will authorize family and isolated directory for downloading say tomorrow and maybe a 12hr period. it works, a vpn somehow would be nice. never used it but should.

Probably the quickest to set up is TeamViewer. You can set it up for file transfer or VPN. All you have to do is email your code (and when you are likely to have your PC running). You can make the code per session or permanent until you change it. I have not done file transfer but I assume you have to designate a folder on your PC that is shared.

TeamViewer server acts like a DNS server. It knows your IP address so if someone tries to connect with your code, it connects that person to your PC with the limited access.

you can as mentioned. I have a secondary drive i allocated. i created a directory called family only. pictures or what ever. Its smart to keep them out. i don't need them to access the operating system and shouldn't. Its about isolation.

Thanks for the replies.

If I got a NAS drive, would I need to keep my PC on for the colleague to access the images? Or only the NAS?

For the other option, FTP, will this slow down my PC? Or just slowdown network related activities such as downloading and websurfing?
