Im going to be buying a PC off a friend of mine, its a good one as he has only had it for about a year. It is a Intel Pentium 4, 2800 MHz, with a Nvidia Geforce4 MZ 440 with AGP8X, and 512mb of ram.

Im planning to get a new Radeon Graphics card (Radeon R9600xt),video card (maybe) and a new 512mb ram card. But i am unsure what i really should get. Anyone here help me out at all? I want to upgrade the PC to 1024mb RAM and a really good graphic card to replay the one currently in it.

The ram depends on how big your hard drive is on the computer, if it only has a 40-80gb, 512 is probly fine, and 1gb would just be overkill. However you can never go wrong with a videocard upgrade! To which card to purchace really depends on what you will be using it for!:)

 that the first time I ever heard harddrive space had any to do with ram.

Amount of ram you need have nothing to do with how big your harddrive is. It have to do with how many programs you plan on running at once and how much ram does the programs you use take up.

yeah, well if you have a big hd, youl have alot of programs, thats how it worked for me anyways, i went from a 40gb to a 200gb. and now i have alot of programs running, therefore the 1gb of ram. whereby when i had the 40gb, there was only so much i could have... and a 512MB of ram did me fine!

maybe when he got a bigger hard drive, he started using more programs, and had more programs at startup so he thought it had to do with that...?

go with 512 mb ~ 1 gb. and PC-3200 is a must.

nowadays, 1gb is preferred, but if you have a tight budget, go with 512mb. I'm going for a PC-4000 1gb. Almost got it.. just a few more days....

No, it is not

Not really. Do keep in mind that 128MB is a must, 256-384 is for tight budget, 512 is good, 1GB is for extensive crap, and 2GB is way overboard

He never said he was upgrading his motherboard. So he needs to use what will work with it. I would try to find out what kind of ram it has now. And if it is 2 256 sticks or one 512. If it is 1 512 then you should probably get another 512 stick of the same kind. If it is 2 256's then you should probably get one 512 of the same kind also. Check to see how the motherboard handles ram.

oh yes it is a must.

anything lower than pc-3200 is crappy and too slow; time for upgrade, wake up!

many (or most, rather) softwares nowadays use a lot of RAM.

Heck, Windows XP alone uses up almost 256 MB just to run thus 512 will be ideal and 1 gb will do well too.

Hehe 2nd for me :P

.
It is not a must.

1. Unless you're running benchmarks (and thus, not using the computer), you wont notice crap all difference in day to day stuff
2. Not all mobos accept PC3200 memory

many (or most, rather) softwares nowadays use a lot of RAM.
Which means the emphasis is on quantity rather than speed.

384 is the highest that I have ever seen for a normal program

The mininum for XP is 64, XP will run, but many progs won't:

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition

PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*

Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor

CD-ROM or DVD drive

Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

ha~

I guess I keep thinking this as an oc'ing forum.

Seriously, I'm all about speed and performance.

I guess many ppl on here ain't.

I'm out.

It is and it isn't. You have to understand not everyone feels the need to OC and those that don't (and those who don't run benchmarks) don't care that something could be faster as long as it works

I'm a budget person myself. But I got into upgrading computer and stuff a little while back. I'm sorry if I offended some ppl, cuz I kept thinking that this was an Oc'ing forum.

My bad.

alright, I'll enjoy this site and help as many ppl as I can with oc'ing out of mind in some cases. lol

Kewl~!

However, I was wondering if there was a newcomer section on this forum. couldn't introduce myself.

hi

I'm zipnogg and I'm new to this site but not really new to computer hardware and stuff.

Not at all ... there's definitely a benifit to discussions about all those cool premium parts and stuff too ... its just that when giving [purchase] advice, to keep the other aspects in mind :)

I agree, what if you had doom3, half life 2, and far cry on a 20gb disk?

I would buy another 512mb from newegg for $35.
