What updates to download?

i always have the automatic updates turned off for windows but lately i've been told to turn it on or at least let windos notify me and let me choose what to download.

that's what i did today, and it came up with a list of many things including updates on:

Sp1; Sp3, Security Updates for Windows XP, 2007 Mic. Office, Wind. Genuine advantage ...etc.

i've heard it's risky to download some of these updates as they might screw up my windows and they take up a lot of space on HDD.

i don't know what to do now ....

i would say download all the up to date service packs, and security updates although i wouldnt let windows update do it as they will go straight into your machine, and if you ever need to reinstall you will have to download them all over again, note which updates you need and go on to microsoft download center, and download manually, and click the save option and direct it to desktop, then you can save the file so you will always have it save it onto a disc or usb flash drive, or even your hard drive, as for office i dont bother with them and my machines fine, they come out with a new office update every 5 mins and most of them dont do much.
