What Version of Linux for a NOOB file server

I want to make a file server for my house. I am definitely a NOOB when it comes to linux. I am curious what you would all recomend for the OS...

I thought Red Hat but its not free like I thought it was...

So I am thinking Fedora 12??
 
I am wanting to be able to protect folders, so If User A from their windoze box saves a file in a folder I create for them, User B will not be able to access it without a password...
