Upgrading to Vista on my laptop...

what version should i get with these specs...

Turion64 X2 TL-60 @ 2.03GHz
2048MB 667 Patriot (2 x 1GB)
100GB @ 7200RPM 16MB HTS722020K9SA00
256MB GeForce 7200

64 or 32bit?

I chose ultimate 32-bit and have absolutely zero issues with it. I tried 64 but had issues finding a few drivers and programs wouldnt run. I highly recomend Ultimate 32 though!

Definitely 32-bit. You may find Home Premium to run a bit smoother than Ultimate.

So 32bit Premium?

I'm just looking for the best performance out of my system...

I do not need any unnecessary tools...

If you are completely sure you want Vista, then yes, 32-bit Home Premium. Ultimate will give you a lot of things that you'll most likely never use.

If you want the best performance from your system, I'd strongly consider XP (any flavor).

If you want performance and no "unnecessary tools" consider Home Basic. It's the lean version of Vista - very comparable to XP, but with a dramatically better look and feel. If you want slick UI graphics and lots of built-in media tools, go with Home Premium. Home Basic actually is a very attractive UI and has the search, kernel, and security that you want.

Microsoft's list of features in the different versions is here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx. That list of features kind of implies that Home Basic can't view pictures or show videos, it can, very much like Windows XP does, with Media Player and the built-in picture tool similar to that in Windows XP. I don't know how much value "Windows Mobility Center" holds for laptop owners, that alone may be reason enough to go with home premium. As a Home Basic user, most of the "features" in the list are not things I would ever use.

On a laptop... 32 bit would be fine. The only major advantage for 64bit is the option of having 4gb of memory, but on a laptop i doubt your ever going to have that much ram.
