I am wondering if I should get DDR2 667 RAM and OC it to 800, and save 100 bucks over buying DDR2 800, or just get the DDR2 800 to be safe. Is it as easy to OC RAM as the CPU? Whats good DDR2 667 to OC to 800? What should I do?
 
If your saving $100, I would highly recommend doing that.

Generally DDR2-800 is just overvolted DDR2-667 or lower, but the difference being that the DDR2-800 is guaranteed to work at those speeds.
 
There is no guarantee ever that any particular RAM will overclock in a particular system. Especially cheap RAM. To be honest, you should always buy the better RAM.
 
No guarantee? If you get the same setup, same parts, are very cautious, and know exactly what you are doing, arent you like 96% guaranteed at least?
 
You have a good chance of getting an overclock but nothing is guranteed. Sometimes something holds you back and there's nothing you can do other than replacing the weak link.
 
DDR2-800 is usually able to overclock 50-100Mhz higher than DDR2-667. While OMEGA's hypothesis is partially correct, performance DDR2-800 is probably checked more before it is sent out.
 
I have a set of $450 Dual Channel DDR sticks in one machine. They are said to overclock several hundred MHz. I'll be damned if I can get 10 out of those sticks, regardless of voltage and I know my shit.

I have seen another guy with cheap memory take is up 100MHz. So there are no guarantees.

I've also overclocked RAM that would let me into Windows, but once I started working the computer would crash.

Never believe anyone who tells you you are guaranteed an overclock in any rig. Always buy the best and fastest RAM you can afford, or there's a good chance you could be kicking yourself in the ass later.

Ok. Dude. Seriously. I said "regardless of voltage" and "I know my shit". I've been overclocking computers since Jesus built his first table (or so it seems anyways. lmao).

I started out overclocking with dipswitches and shunts. lol. I'm beginning to feel like a relic.
