Whats OverClocking?

Its a very bad disease...Dont start reading up on it unless you are ready to spend countless dollars on new parts and accessories just to squeeze a few more Mhz out of your machine. I had a perfectly capable Q9450 setup that was plenty powerful enough for any normal user, but I sold it and got new hardware because I was at a brick wall of 3.6Ghz with it...lol its a dangerous addiction

Lolz

Overclocking is a lot like running multiple video cards.

Unnecessary.

Its a way of forcing a computer component to run faster then its stock speed. Wether its worth doing is a matter of if you don't mind risking potential damage and depends on how fast the component can be overclocked while being stable, not shortening the components life expectancy, and not overheating. My Core 2 Duo E8400 stock speed is 3.0 ghz but with some minor adjustments I got it up to 3.6 ghz stable, with little to no temperate change and its noticeably faster.

Yeah but it seems like the amount gained is so small in relation to the risk being taken. Some people with money may think its fun to overclock, however I have precious little money, and I like the way my computer runs now. I think overclocking is a waste of time and money. But each to their own.

overclocking is a waste of money?

how is making something run faster by adjusting settings a waste of money?

I'd only overclock if I felt there is a 100% chance of it not doing anything bad to my computer. For most cpu's i'd say its not necessary.

my cpu doesnt need to overclocked but i did, got min running @ 3.6ghz stock it runs 2.6ghz....

i overclock because its more power for no more cost

O.C.'ing

I agree with ZBLOWFISH, if there was no chance (or a VERY low) chance that something would be damaged, then I would consider OC'ing. It would be wasting my money (and my time) if I had to fix my computer after OC'ing caused damage.

Its a marginal cost/benefit issue. Will the benefit of OC'ing outweigh the damage it may cause? In my case the benefit will almost never outweigh the costs, so I dont do it.

Though its pretty cool when someone can do it and make it work well. I've seen some really cool OC'ed computers. OverClockers are the Richard Pettys of the computer world, they can do what most people wont, or cant do.
