What's so great about the FX chips?

Why are they so much money? What are they for and exactly do they do that make them worth the money?

They are just really fast processors. Its like saying why are Feraris more expensive then hondas, they are just better.

They have unlocked upward multipliers. They're for the enthusiasts, however, they are basically obsolete now that Conroe is out.

the layer of silicon on top of the nano wires is smaller, therefore making it run cooler. this is why its a higher quality, faster chip. not to mention, they come with the upward multiplier unlocked. this is a very prominent advantage for the enthusiast overclocker... personally, i overclock to save money, and buying an FX chip won't save me any money. generally the big deal is that it was the best chip that AMD could possibly make at the time... like FX-55 was the best chip a year or so ago. FX-57 is the fastest single core, and FX-62 is the fastest dual core. im not sure if theyre making faster single cores or not though.

So if I'm wanting a chip for high end gaming, an FX would be the best bet? I'm really starting to look at them.

If you can afford them yes. I myself think they're a little overkill. I think SLI and a 4800+> Single GPU and an FX. But to answer your question, the FX often uses hand picked Opeteron Cores. The FX also has the fastest clock speed AMD offers. It also comes with 128+128 L1 cache, 1MB L2 cache, and 2000MHz (effective) FSB.

??? No idea what your talking about here, did you mean strained silicon? if so then its not the reason the chips are faster, cooler, or better

Well, he's right :) You can get an AMD FX62 for ~ $1000. Or you can get a Conroe E6700 for ~ $550. Your choice (I know what mine would be).

Remember though, even if you buy a FX, you will see little improvement on high end games that depend heavily on the graphics card. So, if you have the money to buy an FX CPU, then it's probly better to buy a X2 3800 instead (dual core, at $154) and either:

1) A nVidia 7900gt to replace your x1600. Cheapest I can find is this one, at $260.

2) An ATI crossfire mastercard to go with your current x1600. Only one I can find is a x1900 mastercard, which is most definately not cheap, at $460. But, ATI are currently working on software that will allow one of the cards in a crossfire set-up to calculate the physics while gaming, instead of the CPU doing this.

I can't be bothered to suggest whole new builds on other sockets.

just go for a 4400+ or a 4800+... both will be able to max the settings in pretty much any game. i'd take a better video card over a better processor for a computer thats going to be gaming alot anyday.

It's still more expensive then conroe but you can get a FX-62 cheaper then 1000$, its 875$ with a motherboard at frys.(cheapy motherboard but still, it works)
