whats the best fastest reliable cd/dvd burner to get for my tower pc ?

pc spec:

asus p5wd2 premium
p4 3.2ghz
2gb ram
250gb hard drive
6200 turbo cache graphics geforce
400watt power supply.

Lite-On would be a good burner. Very reliable and the burn results I've seen are 98-99%.

Here is my NEC burn result...it's a clickable pic.

Please be aware that "fast" and "reliable" are mutually exclusive :)

Recent LiteOn (rated 18X or higher, the older ones are flaky), Benq 1655x+, recent NEC drivwes (4550+) , Plextor PX712,PX716,PX740 etc are goof drives

plextors are the fastest, and the best, but reliability is a joke

like praetor said, if you want a drive than can crank out FLAWLESS 16x burns in under 5 minutes on even 4x media, don't expect the drive to last longer than a year or so. worth every penny while it lasts, tho

Well, the 1st one only writes cd's.

It's up to you.

Keep in mind a drive that's built with SPEED as it's main objective is going to be a lot LOUDER than most drives you've heard in the past.

Plextors and lite-ons (which i could swear are made by the same people. They even have the same features, and CALL them the same things) are both INCREDIBLY noisy drives!

Sound like jet engines.

As long as that's not a problem for you, you'll be happy.

Ill pretend you know what you're talking about and what you meant to say was "plextor drives can be fast but burning fast results in low reliability"

Um... where did i say that? Burning at 16x will most likely result in P1 errors so there's no way i would have reccomended 16x for "reliability-focused" burning.

1. Plextors and Liteons are not made by the same people
2. Older plextors are made by Plextor, some of the newer ones are rebagged Benq's with extra minor functionality here and there
3. As for featurses, i've not been able to activate gigarec on any of my liteys
4. It's only noisy if yer speakers are set too low :P

i had a sony 2x cd-r drive back in the day :)

Still used the caddies (anyone even remember those?) and cost me ~$500

t'was a good drive, tho

i have a dell thats about 1.5 years old now (i hate it). but the phillips drive that came with it does pretty good.

used to do great...till a few months ago. now the door creeps open real slow. and when i close it, it goes really slow back in..then usually it doesnt close all the way. it stays about 1/16th inch open... then it opens the tray again. i usually have to reach over and give it a little tap for it to close up all the way. it burns and plays fine tho. its just the tray opens and closes soooo slow, and usually doesnt close all the way with out a tap.

so can i replace the bands in there?? or possibly the motor if its weak?? i have an old cd-rom drive in my closet i can use for parts. anyone ever tried to do this?

its been used A LOT tho, so it may be time to retire and replace. its been a good one tho.

Been there done that, was my first burner.

IM getting a sony from newegg for my desktop from the reviews it seams like a good one
Note that Sony (like recent Plextors, HPs, etc) doesnt make burners... and instea,d thy just rebag others :)
