Which Operating System is best for gaming? If "xp" then what kind? If "vista" then what kind?

Also, are alot of things combatible with 64bit or is 32bit the best?

Best for gaming...hmmm....It all depepnds on how much ram and how good your graphic card is. Like IF you have atleast 4 gb ram and a 1 gb memory on your graphic card, then windows vista is the best . Else Windows XP..to be honest, both the os are pretty good. except for a couple of minor compatibility problems < courtsey of microsoft>..lol

I hear that you can run Call of duty 4 on Ubuntu using wine......havent tried it yet...but i hear its good

With best for gaming in mind you can't even include Windows XP since it it limited to Direct X 9 and the newest games all use or will use Direct 10 (or even 11 which Windows 7 comes with). So that just leaves Vista and Windows 7 as your only two choices.

Windows 7 is so much smoother and runs so much better then Vista I think the choice is pretty easy. Even now whenever I use Vista even a new machine I'm surprised at how long it takes to do some things. Windows 7 simply doesn't have thoses issues.

I've had some lags on my Dell running Windows 7 I didnt notice in Vista. I don't mean in games, but just regular usage and playing flash videos. Honestly, I'd stick with Vista x64. I know that's what I'm leaving on my desktop until W7 gets some service packs and such out :P

Just remember the Windows 7 you where running was an RC at best if not a Beta. The final version comes out next month.

So, if there isn't much difference in vista ultimate and vista home or whatever, should I go with windows vista home premium?

I'd like to have windows 7 when it releases, but it's going to cost alot and I'm sure it will have bugs too.

I run Windows 7 Retail Client, and so far, games work pretty well. IF they don't work off the bat you can always go into properties and change o.s. to run it as (I.E. Windows xp sp 1/2/3, windows vista sp 1/2.) I like it a lot :)

I am not sure but I heard that if you have purchased windows vista this year you will be able to upgrade to windows 7 either for free or at a discount. Has anyone else heard anything that resembles this claim?

It's true, but you must purchase the specific product that offers the free upgrade, like this:

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders w/ Tech Guarantee - OEM (89.99)
Includes free Windows 7 upgrade coupon

Better hurry, because those offers are sure to disappear after October 22nd.

Sounds cool. I might just go for the windows 7 if I can afford it.
