I never turned my old pc off..only restarted it about once a week...pc still runs too...old compaq presario with a p3 @847mhz and 348mb of ram..

So performance isnt affected by never turning off?

correct. the only thing that will slow a computer down is spyware, virus, and misuse by means of porn, un-safe websites with adaware spyware etc.
it will eventually bog your system down.

ive a server running for 5 years. doesnt have internet access apart from 4 ports to alert police/e-mail me as its used to control my security camera's and house alarm.
never heard the computer make a noise or anything. i replaced the mouse maybe 2 years ago as i had an old trackball. thats it!

But if your using windows, it can bog down your memory, so a system reboot is good every once and a while so it can clear the cache and RAM.

The 2 computers I've had have always been turned off every night about 98% of the time. I leave them off all day, turn them on when I get home between 4 and 7 and shut them when I sleep between 10-12. First one is now a little older than 10 years old and can still run no problem, although its quite slow(P2 266). And my current one which is not a little more than 5 years old does the same. The difference is that the 1st one was used more(as I was younger and had more time). Not a single part has ever broken down on me, even the HD of the 1st one, I use it in my current one... The only thing being crap is my current computer, it came with a crap cd-rom drive, well I can't say it got worst, I think its actually working better for the past year ? And it was also bugged from the 1st week I got it, it would restart randomly(between 3-20 times a day mostly after being opened, but NEVER when gaming)... It was like that for about 3-4 years and now somehow, it only restarts on its own once every 2-4 months.

I guess we can say it won't make your computer worst if you turn it off, based on my experience of course.

If you are paranoid like me and clear all history, temp files etc every night then a restart or shutdown is the only way. Your index.dat files will grow into many MB's and are only flushed and re-created on a reboot, at least Ccleaner needs a reboot to delete these files.
Therefore I shut down every night

Exactly what I do! EXACTLY! ;)

Haha! Nicely put, Dave! :P

Well, I turn it off in the evenings. But if I go out during the day, I'll put it on Standby.

I always turn it off when I am finished with it. I guess power supplies last longer as 1) it gets a chance to cool down and 2) its fan plus the fans in the case don't perpetually suck in and blow around dust.

About dust--I wash my fans in the dishwasher, and I washed my motherboard from my older Compaq I don't care about last week in it too. I wouldn't reccommend trying it but I am a clean freak and have a Level 5 obsessive-compulsive with cleanliness. (BTW, the motherboard works!)

i always leave mine on, and dont get me wrong of course i give it a reboot every day or so, but that doesnt count as turning it off does it
