First I never said that FarCry was the be all end all game of games. The OP is asking for our opinion about what game you think is the nicest looking. I said that FarCry with aa, af, and hdr is one of the nicest looking games imo.
Have I ever played oblivion at those settings? No I haven't, but I have seen many a video and screen shot of that game maxed at a high resolution. Did it look nice? Sure it did. Does FarCry look nice? Sure it does. Does FarCry have some parts/ objects that look awful? Yes, epically the people and lip syncing. Does that go for the same as oblivion? You bet ya.
If oblivion looked how nice it was supposed to look, that game would have been awesome, but guess what. It doesn't. No where near it in fact.
Are you saying that just because a model of a car is made out of tubes and circles that it doesn't mean it won't look good? Have you ever seen the video of that guy that drew a car in Microsoft Paint? Did that not look good? (just a reference)
I'm not going to go into coding and engines since I don't have a vast knowledge on them. And frankly, don't care to.
So I guess it comes down to the original question. What game has the nicest graphics.
For me, I don't have one that I think looks the nicest, but FarCry is by far one that I think is gorgeous.
And for you I'm guessing it's Oblivion.
