Whats the difference between all these memory cards anyway???????

One's like SD, mini SD, Compaq flash, Smart Media, MMC, that stuff. The only difference I see is the size of the card. Can someone tell me why all these card are so unique from each other?
 
the first ones were the compact flash, and i believe companies had to pay fees to enable their devices to use them, so manufacturers started creating their own proprietary media.

sony uses their memory stick, fuji uses their xd, and so on and so on
 
I have a small SD 2.0gb card. For my small camera.


I would assume, its based off of the buyers camera, and personal preference.


Like... why so many flash drives?

Thats prolly a bad analogy...but...yeah
