whats the newest motherboard?

Socket AM2(940 pin).....just search, several threads have been made about it. Also 939 is not the newest socket...Opterons run on the new 940 pin.

I thought that socket 940 came out before socket 939, and was used by the old fx-51? Because I remember it being an obsolete socket a while ago. But the opteron sledgehammers also use it currently.....I don't think it is really very new

The new socket will be named the M2, but will have 940 pins. Also, I hear something about a socket F for opterons with 1,207 pins.

So the new socket is M2 it just happens to have 940 pins

Yer right. Just a another show of how server technology determines desktop technology.

Probably no :P

I bet socket socket F and M2 will come out together, then people will see a huge performance increase with socket Fs integrated PCIe, then AMD will make a new socket after socket M2 being on the market for 6 months... sorta like what happened with 754 and 939 :P

yes, socket 940 uses 800mhz hypertransport, 1600mhz effective (2 channels) and socket 939 uses 1ghz or 1000mhz hypertransport. 939 is the newest socket. yea, the newer socket will be out soon but im sure theyre not going to simply abandon the 939 socket processor line. its not definite when socket M2 will be out, and i heard that it produces more heat and uses more power than 939pin socket.
also, id say just go ahead and build a system 939socket based, because intels going to be doing alot better in the next year or two hopefully.
also, go dual core. more and more applications are being optimized for it.

Not too sure about Intel doing better. Their dual core, the new extreme CPU (the 552 right?) was actually beaten by the 4800+ which is 200 bucks less. Intel said that it is better than AMD on "heavy loads". Besides AMD is coming out with it's X2 5000+ and hopefully their FX dual core:D and with the Extreme Intels you have to use their specific motherboard.:( However, I hear that there is DDR3 coming...

but is it true that another socket will be out soon?

As to soon, I don't think that the new M2/F socket boards will be worth buying until 2007. The first ones are due out 2nd quarter of this year, but there will be stuff that needs to be worked out, and whatever

Great. I'm saving up for AM2 and I don't think my computer will hold out much longer than half a year... check the sig.

Pfft... wimp :P Check out my dads house rig in the sig
Are you kidding me? My dad has a p3 800MHz, 2GB of RAM and like 300GB of storage space. It runs as slow as heck with xp pro on that processor, tho. But that is his fastest. He also uses a p2 like 300MHz and 128MB RAM, a p3 600MHz with 256MB RAM, and a p2 400MHz with 64MB. THe latter 3 systems all run NT (shudder)

Oh and they all have ugly ass beige cases (actually I think it is referred to as "putty") :D
