What's the purpose of Bios and is there a default?

I have an Asus A7N8X-E deluxe and was wondering what's the purpose of Bios setup. Also is there a default for this? Is it just to let the OS know what hardware is installed? When starting the puter, how do you get into bios? See I never setup the bios on one before and just want to make sure it's running right and operating the way it should. What and how's the best way to do so. Believe it or not, I just built this one and somehow got it to the point that it's working fine although when it first fires up I notice it comes up Primary drive not found and secondary drive not found. But like I said,,,,it works fine.

Bios - BASIC INPUT OUTPUT SYSTEM

It is the 'medium' between the software side and hardware side of your PC, it is necessary and depending on your version of BIOS there may be alternate ways of entering BIOS, also, there should be a default setting or a way to reset it. There should be some sort of prompt during startup that says in the corner of the screen to enter BIOS ie: "press F6 to enter BIOS" otherwise try space bar, tab, esc button, I don't know it really depends.

Hope I helped.
