Whats the score with Phenom and AM2

I understand that Phenom and the new AMD range will be on an AM2+ socket. The socket itself is the same basically as AM2 (same pins etc) but just has slightly different capabilities. Thus the phenom processors will be backwadrs compatible as such and work in an AM2 socket.

So what will the differences be. If i was to run one of these newer processors (upon release) in my AM2 board then. What difference would i see in comparison to the same processor being run on an AM2+ board?

Also anyone got any idea of what sort of performance increase these processors will be offering, any comparison charts or anything yet against the higher end AM2 processors?

Faster Hypertransport speeds and the AM2+ boards can flog each core up and down indivually as in voltage and X as like Quite& Cool. Not for sure but I think AM2+ boards will have the new PCie standard where you will have in SLI 2 32X lanes or 4 X16 lanes for a quad setup instead of just 2 X16 lanes.

yeah i did read something on hyperstransport 3.0

so I currently (or will have in a day or 2) run an X2 6000+, would one of these phenom processors in an AM2 board then be beating it for performance or do we not know yet?

Tought one that, AMD are keeping it in house at the min and can`t find specs anywhere :/

But The register website say...
It's been claimed in the past that Socket AM2 motherboards will, with a BIOS update, support AM3 processors, even though AM3 mobos will not be able to host AM2 CPUs. Socket AM2+ may be the means by which this, if true, will be achieved.

Which if true will be great. So there is room for upgrading in the future if needed.

I dont really know, I dont care about the Quite&Cool, I disable it anyway. The only thing I can see that would hold it back would be the lower Hypertransport speed, but I dont think there any where close to eating up the bandwidth now so it might not have much of a impact or none at all.

They suppost to come out with AM3 late in 2008, so I,m staying with AM2 boards till then, I kinda think the AM2+ boards will be short lived! Alot of people will just update there bios on AM2 boards and run the AM2+ processors instead of buying a whole new board. But then you run into board makers not wanting to update there bios so they can sell you a new board. Ha, around and around we go

Very true but I remeber the 939 64`s coming out, then a few months down the line the X2 939`s come out and all that was required was a simple BIOS update. Worked very well. Weather that will happen again, well only time can tell.

Well i'm hoping the Asus Crosshair should be easy enough to adapt for AM2+ processors should i actually choose to upgrade again. Although to be fair i'm only just making the step up to dual core so i would guess that my 6000+ will last me a long time yet :)

I say with the Crosshair, they will probably update it, people might have problems with sub 100 buck boards, but brands like Asus-Gigabyte-DFI will probable update the bios on all there higher end AM2 boards. Oh, I saw where there coming out with a AM2 Windsor X2 6400 at 3.2 ghz.

Would not worry about it , I would say the 6000 would clock as well. 3.2 or 3.3 is the most you can get out of a windsor without really cranking up the voltage, you can get 6000 to 3.2 pretty easy and cheaper too;)

when i was looking at reviews on the crosshair the one board that was putting up a serious fight and on the odd occasion beating it was the Foxconn. Seems to be a really good performer. I only opted fro the crosshair above it for the extra cooling and other useful items on it. The foxconn looks damn good to me...
