Whats the word on CPU coolers?

Ok, I'm trying to figure out what to get to cool my cpu. I'm looking for something that looks cool but performs really well too. I'm interested in the heat pipe type, the ones that look like mini jet engines or the ones that have a blower type fan over the cpu. I would also like a fan controler or be able to put a fan controler on it. I've looking into the Titan Vanessa L-Type, Jet 7, Asus star ice, and the Aero 7+. Any of these good? Any that you would recommend over these? Would also like it fairly easy to put on, don't really want to take the mother board out. My setup is an L4VXA2 motherboard with a 2.7 ghz pentium 4 running at 3.023 ghz. Looking to spend under $60. Thanks
 
Normally, they don't do much better than stock. They might be more quiet and all, but actual cooling usally is about the same.
 
Look for a solid copper heat sink with many/small fins. As far as those coolers I've used the Aero 7+ and the Jet 7, both work well. I prefer the turbine fans, just make sure it's not too loud for you and pushes enough air.
 
Yeah, I'm going to get that artic silver thermal paste. According to some of the reviews that I've read, it seems that there are some pretty good coolers out there that perform much better than stock. Whats better, the aero 7+, Jet 7 or one that uses heat pipes? From what I've read, it seems that the heat pipes are the "new thing". I that true? I really do like the looks of the jet 7 and I think you can add an extra fan. But the aero 7+ seems to perform a little better according to one review I've read. Anyone else have any opinions? Thanks
 
I like the big typhoon... I would get one myself but it would be put to waste on my current system.
Its big but very quiet and an excellent cooler.
 
the big typhoon does look like a pretty good one. What can I use to see how hot my CPU is running? My thinking is, the cooler I can keep my CPU, the better it will perform and longer it will last. Is that true or would I be wasting money in a real good cooler?
 
The Typhoon's a great cooler but installing it does require you to remove the board.

Keeping the CPU cooler will increase its lifetime, but in reality CPUs will become outdated long before they fail.

An aftermarket cooler is a good idea for overclocking, otherwise it's not as important.
 
Ok, thanks. My CPU is just a little overclocked so I'm guessing pretty much any aftermarket CPU cooler should work from what I'm hearing so far. Ah, I was interested in the aero 7+ but it seems that it won't work with my socket 478

well, after doing some more research, I discovered the Jet 4 designed for the socket 478. It seems that this one outperforms the Jet 7 a little bit too. Found it for $14 at case mods too. Seems like a good deal.
