Hey guys,

I've always valued your input, and I ask for your assistance once again ;).

My friend is building a new PC, I know more about computers then he does, but I haven't updated my self for some time and I'm a little rusty on the newest technologies out there. I was hoping you guys could tell me about the new CPUs that Intel and AMD are presenting these days and motherboards.

I would also love to discuss a possible parts list:

Specifications for new build:

- Budget 1200$ to 1800$ CAD
- For Gaming
- Should be able to play Crysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crysis)
- Overclocking Undecided...
(I'll add more as we refine our ideas)

With that budget I'd recommend you get a Q6600, it's a better processor AND it's quad core. Also instead of getting the 8800GTS get the 8800GT. And as for the PSU, a quality 500 watt PSU will do. Finally, definitely look into after market cooling, especially if your friends a quiet computer.

New 45nm intel chips come out november so if possible, wait. Prices should drop on the cpus that are out now or he can opt for the newer technology.

EDIT: Also generally, i believe that the proformance to price ratio for sli isnt great.

Right, forgot about the 45nm, good call. If your friend waits till early next year, he can pick up the Q9450 with 12mb of L2 cache for about $300.

I remember a little less than a year ago, we were arguing either to get a single core for gaming as oppose to dual-cores. For the same price, you could get a lower ghz dual core, or a faster ghz single core processor. The faster frequency of a single core was better for gaming since not all games took advantage of the dual-cores quite yet. Is it the same situation for dual vs quad?

And also I'm not to sure were to go for Motherboards. I know Asus always had been a good company. Any suggestions/ direction before I do some research on that?

Thanks.

I personally thing Gigabyte's boards are better than Asus, but that is mostly because of how picky Asus boards are with different ram. If they could get their act together, then I think Asus would be good.

An asus board with Nforce would be awesome, look at MSI as well, MSI makes some of the better boards in the market IMO>

But, Asus is picky with RAM, and the RAM they choose are usually expensive and rather not that good

MSI only? What about Abit? Gigabyte? Biostar? XFX? Foxconn?

I'm not sure where you heard that, but any RAM will work, if you mean for overclocking I wouldn't know. I am just recommending Asus based on all their reviews which are consistently very good. I don't overclock so I wouldn't know

Sounds good, we'll look into MSI, Gigabyte and Asus. Thanks.

Anyone can shed some light with the dual vs quad core?

Ok, I've updated my list with tentative Items and prices. Feel free to suggest any changes or any extra information you may have.

I would like to ask about Vista. What would be the pros/cons for the different versions (home, premium, ultimate...).

thanks

Vista (imo) is great...it performs just fine on my computer (which isnt as good as your's will be).

Just be prepared to hear all kinds of stuff from idiots "vista sucks, it crashes, its soo slow, its not compatible with anything, im a homo that wines about everything, blah blah blah, etc".

From my experience, I've never had any of these problems^ that most people complain about.

I agree, I run Vista on my 2nd machine and dont have any of those things, its not slow, it boots up rather fast actually, its compatible with everything Ive thrown at it, and not once has it crashed or blue screened. My 2nd machine basics are:

A64 X2 4200+ (S939)
DFI nForce4 Ultra
3GB PC-3500 DDR
GeForce 8400GS PCI-E
Raptor 36GB SATA

Yes, Vista is what we'll need, but what about all the different versions and such.

And also I added a second possible system (green) with the Quad core mentioned on the first post. Think this is better?

EDIT: I was looking at these charts, and it seems the Q6600 Quad 2.4 ghz from intel is better (even for gaming) than the AMD X2 @ 3ghz...
