what's up with all these updates

Is it common for so many windows updates on new operating systems like W7?

I recently bought a Netlap computer (11.6 screen) and evertime I turn around there is an update that has to be downloaded from windows.

Is this normal?
 
There are a lot lately, not exactly normal but since when was Microsofts OS classed as normal.
It's such a popular OS that everyone and anyone pokes and prods it looking for loopholes, at least they are doing the job that Microsoft should have done before it's release and getting these "holes" filled in.
