I've always had ATI, and realised recently that they suck. Their driver support is crappy, and the support from their 3rd party companies suck as well (or at least the ones I've dealt with). Now I am using a friends 8600gt and have had no drivers issues (unlike with every ATI card I've owned) and they seem to be pretty solid. IMO, nvidia > ATI.

Nvidia For The Win.

Their 8800's Series are Taking the Lead, But Ive Heard some pretty Dodgy Stuff about the 8600's Series

Go the 7600's Series :D

My 7600GS has lasted me a LONG time, I have a ATI Something in my Family computer, and it's pretty un-Reliable.

Sure, Its old, But i would of expected better reliability.

Fish, Go Nvidia.

EDIT:

Something to make you laugh Gaming Shorts From Nvidia! What Haven They Thought Of?

so if i was going to get a 8800GTX
what brand would be best? iv'e been reading EVGA reviews and people say they run really hot?

any suggestions?

I prefer nvidia, I don't care what partner brand (evga, asus, bfg, etc). I've had a lot of bad experience with ATI drivers. Not that nvidia doesn't have its own driver problems occasionally but for the most part those haven't effected me much.

ATI = Sapphire or HIS
Nvidia = XFX

Using an ATI Radeon x800 Sapphire in my old system but now moved to nVidia XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB Extreme in my new system

Well with the most recent generation of graphics cards without a doubt I prefer Nvidia. But at the moment I'm using an ATi card which has proved to be very good for me and hasn't failed me once. Brand wise within ATi, well, I purchase no other brand ATi card other than HIS Excalibur purely for their cooler and of course for the fact that their cards are clocked faster than all other ATi brands from factory settings. Plus with the cooler provided, you can up it a lot more and still keep it cool :).

Rove.
