Ok so a friend of mine is trying to get rid of his 4 year old mac G5. He threw out a price, $550. He said he would pre-install final cut studio 2 (a little outdated IMO) and he would throw in adobe cs4 master collection. It includes keyboard, mouse, and 17" monitor. Here's the rest of the specs:

# Dual 2.0 GHz
# 512K On-Chip Level 2 Cache per processor
# ATI Radeon 9100 Pro Graphics 64MB DDR SDRAM
# 1.5 GB Ram (8 slots available)
# DVD +/-R,RW,ROM SuperDrive
# 4 Expansion Slots: 1AGP 8x Pro with GFX Card installed, 1 133MHz 64-Bit PCI-X, 2 100MHz 64-Bit PCI-X
# 6 Ports - 3 USB, 1 FireWire 800, 2 FireWire 400
# Optical audio IN and OUT
# 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet & 56k V.92 Modem
# AirPort AND Bluetooth
# 160 GB Hard Drive
# OSX Leopard 10.5.4 Server
# 17 Inch Studio Display
# Tower Stand

I just want some other opinions on this deal. Is $550 too low for this package? Should I look for a catch?

Considering it went for well over $2000 it cant be that bad. What kind of monitor?

I do feel that the having a mac is very restrictive (especially the G5 processor) I have a ibook that is almost 4 years old and I have gotten very frustrated because it is very slow and cant run the programs that I need, but I want to run specialized programs. But if are going to just be using it for CS4 and Final Cut and you know you want a mac it sounds like a good deal.

Personally, i would go for a new mac mini which is nearly as powerful for the same price and new(better cpu, somewhat better yet somewhat worse gpu)... if he is installing cs4 master collection, then chances are pretty much 100% its a bootleg(pirated/illegal) copy, as it costs upward of $1000 to begin with.

leopardforest- I know what you mean about the restrictions. But I would just be using this machine for all my media stuff. I only need it for my video editing needs for maybe a year or two, then i go to college and get a new mac book pro most likely. As for the monitor it looks like the standard 17" mac lcd display.

bomberboysk- Im pretty sure he has cs4 suite legally. I think he got licensing for his company, so hes got the rights to a few licenses.

Just to fill you guys in, I do still plan on building a PC in the near future. this just seemed really nice to me because the price wouldn't completely destroy my bank account and also allows me to pay for my pc build later.

If that is what you are going to use it for then, hands down I would say go for it. But why not put the money into your pc build?

Those parts are pretty old, I think you'd be better off with a PC or a new mac mini as mentioned before.

Well, is it his business? If not then technically he cant let you use cs4, if he does, ask if he would put it on a mac mini for you if you buy one. But as for draining the bank account, go with a mac mini;) Decently priced and you will save money for it by not having a 4 year old ineffecient power supply and high power draw cpu's, core 2 duo's are pretty energy effecient, plus you will have new generation 64bit, and snow leopard compatible(the powerpc compatibility will be dropped in snow leopard, so intel is what you want)
