When ATX is plugged in computer gets no power

Ok been going through crap with my computer for the last couple of weeks. I thought it was my psu for awhile but i don't think it is anymore. Whenever I have the ATX coord from the psu plugged into the mobo the computer gets no juice at all. The light on the mobo will come on saying it has power but when I push the power button nothing happens. If I unhook the ATX coord and just leave the 24 pin plug connected to the mobo it will fire up but of course the cpu coord is not connected so only the HDD's, Fans, etc run. Sooooo im guessing its either the motherboard or the cpu im guessing possible both.

No it dosen't work. It won't boot up cause the powercord that goes into the mobo to powerup the CPU is not connected. When it is connect it would boot up at all when I push the power button NOTHING happens no power goes into the computer but the mobo shows it has power by the light that is on it. But whenever I disconnect the powercord from the mobo that powers the cpu the computer turns on but won't boot everything gets power fans, HDDs, CD/DVD roms, my liquid cooling. But won't boot cause the cord for the cpu is not connected.

So that is why im narrowing it down to say it must be my mobo being bad when giving power to the cpu or the cpu is just bad.

So the computer worked before and this problem just started out of the blue? Has the computer been bumped or jostled in a way that the CPU my have come unseated? I don't suppose you have another chip that you can throw in there to test do you? If not you might try re-seating the CPU to see if that helps. It would be a pain in the butt, I know, but it would also give you the chance to inspect the CPU and socket for damage.
 
Another possibility is that your mobo is shorted out. Hence the no activity when power is run through the mobo. Check around to see if your mobo is properly seated on standoffs. If your case does not have a motherboard tray, get brass standoffs.

Perhaps your PSU hasn't got enough power to power your components AND your CPU.

Do you have a spare you could try?

I see. I have to partly agree with you. Not powering may just be an sign of an extremely weak/dead psu. Lights cannot decide what is working or not. Try another PSU, and if possible, try that PSU on another computer.
 
Sorry for long response but I have no computers at the moment. So im on my girlfriends.

Seriously I danno im like stumped its doing a ton of weird things. Heres the problems broken down.

1. Computer randomly restarting, and when it attempts to restart it wouldn't even make it to the beep sequence.

2. I took the computer completly apart and put it back together. Except I did not remove the cpu because I have no thermal paste at the moment.

3. After putting it together I started it up got to the post screen where it said I didn't plug in the video cards. Then suddenly boom it shut down.

4. Would not start up unless I unplugged the ATX cable which powers the cpu. But still shows the motherboard has power. But it would give power to the HDDs, CD Drives, Watercooling, Fans when you push the on button without the ATX connected just the 24-pin power connector. But when I would push the power button to shut it down it would not shutdown unless I turned the switch on the back of the psu.

5. Last night I was playing with it some more as well with things plugged in and not. It stopped even turning on with the 24 pin connected. It showed power on the motherboard from the LED on it. Pushed the power button lights flickered for a second then all power was gone.

Soooooooooo I'm in a world of pain and money lol. Still haven't heard back from OCZ on my RMA for my power supply I'm waiting on that. I think tomorrow at school I will check if I can get a hold of some thermal paste so I can check out my CPU tomorrow afternoon.

So thanks for the responses and keep them Coming and I'll test them out. I even throw my psu around tomorrow onto some other computers and see if I can get them running.
